Gift certificates are vouchers with specific cash value that are typically given to someone to use in exchange for goods and services. Gift certificates can be redeemed at restaurants, local shops, e-commerce websites, spas, and more. If you want to keep your customers coming back or want to incentivize them to spread the word about your products and services, gift certificates are a great idea.
Follow this tutorial to learn how to create your own gift certificate that you can change and customize anytime using a free online tool called Kapwing. Follow these steps:
- What do you include in a gift certificate?
- Open Kapwing
- Adjust the Canvas Size
- Customize Your Gift Certificate
- Export, Download and Share your Gift Certificate
Step One: What do you include in a gift certificate?
A gift certificate usually includes:
- The recipient’s name
- The amount awarded
- The expiration date
- Your company’s contact details such as the website link, phone number, and email
You can include an eye-catching phrase above or leave space at the bottom to include a note on the certificate like the example below. You can be as creative as you want to be here.
Step Two: Open Kapwing
You can use Kapwing’s Online Studio to create or edit your gift certificate with a smartphone or a desktop. For this tutorial, I suggest using a desktop to work with a larger canvas. Head over to the Kapwing Studio in your browser and select Get Started, then Start with a blank canvas.
Step Three: Adjust the Canvas Size
There is no standard size for gift certificates, but they usually range in sizes - from 2 inches high x 3.5 inches wide to 3.5 inches high x 8 inches wide. Today I'll be using 3.5 inches high x 8 inches wide which is converted to 336 pixels x 768 pixels.
To adjust the canvas size, click on your canvas and go to the right-hand side panel. Locate canvas output size and select custom size where you will enter 768 pixels for the width and 336 pixels for the height. In the right-hand side panel, you can also change the background color by choosing a primary color, or browse through 79 other colors by clicking on #ffffff.
Step Four: Customize Your Gift Certificate
The top toolbar allows you to customize your gift certificate with text, images, and elements. When you select Text, you can enter your company name in the text box and place it at the top of the certificate. One of my favorite font styles that I chose to use for this tutorial is Fredoka One because of the clean, rounded edges. You can browse other font styles by clicking on the arrow under Font.
To create a border, you can select Elements and choose the square. Then, select No color for fill color and change the outline color to any color you want. Another popular element that you can use for this gift certificate are lines, which can be placed in the "To" and "From" section.
Images are a great way to customize the gift certificate background and borders. You are able to upload your own company images or you can go to Images in the above toolbar and search for free photos from Unsplash or Pexels. After uploading or searching for an image, you can adjust the image by clicking on Adjust in the right-hand side panel and dragging the sliders for opacity, brightness, contrast, saturation, and blur. I adjusted Opacity from 100 to 15 to create a transparent, opaque look so the photo isn’t the center of attention and the background color remains visible.
Step Five: Export, Download, and Share Your Gift Certificate
When you’re finished creating your gift certificate, click on Export Image in the top right. On the next page, select Download and your image will be saved onto your device. You can attach your gift certificate in a text message, email, or print it out on a thick piece of paper! If you would like to create multiple gift certificate versions you can click on Make a copy and work on a new gift certificate with the same layers.
