If you're under any sort of lockdown or shelter-in-place order during the COVID-19 pandemic, you're getting to know all too well what it's like to be separated from friends & family for an extended period of time. Luckily, in 2020, we have social media, video chats, and phone calls to bring us closer together.

One way to show appreciation for the people close to you is to make a Memories Video. Facebook introduced their own version of these videos years ago, and users have shared auto-generated celebrations of friendship on each other's feeds ever since. But you can make your own custom Memories Video to share anywhere, with your own pictures, videos, text, and music, on your computer or iPhone.

A memory video is a great way to connect with a loved one, celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or reminisce about better times. Here's what you'll need to do to make a memory video online:

  1. Open Kapwing
  2. Edit pictures, video, and text on several slides
  3. Add a favorite song
  4. Download & share

Step 1: Open Kapwing

For a special someone, you'll want to send a special video. You can choose to make a fully custom video from scratch or start instead with a Memory Video Template.

We put together 12 different video templates with specially designed text animations, each with a different tone & atmosphere. Just click "Make It" under the template you want to use, and you'll go to the Kapwing Studio, where you can add, edit, and replace any layer of the video to start crafting your masterpiece.

Step 2: Edit pictures, video, and text on several scenes

The first thing you should do to create your Memories video is choose one of your best photos or videos to start with. If you have a favorite picture or clip with the person you're making the video for, use it for the very beginning of the video! If it has special sentimental value, you might want to add it to both the beginning and end.

Once you've chosen the template you want to use, replace the background image layer by selecting it, tapping the trash can button, then selecting "Upload" in the upper toolbar. Here, you can paste the link to any photo on the web – like a Facebook picture! – or you can search through your iPhone's camera roll for the picture or video you want to start with.

For this first slide, you'll also want to add some text. Select the sample text layer in the template and choose "Edit Layer." Now, type your own message – a simple name card works well for many Memories Videos, something like "James & Brady" for a video celebrating a friendship. Once you've written what you want it to say, you can tap & drag on the text & its corners to change its size, position, and angle. Under your layer editing options, you can also customize its font, color, animation, and background.

The templates all have three scenes already included for you to use getting started. To go between scenes, choose "Scenes" from the upper toolbar and select the scene you want. In the Scenes editor, you can also add additional scenes, delete ones you don't want, rearrange the scenes' order, change your scenes' length, and duplicate scenes. Duplicating scenes is especially useful for Memories Videos – if you like the style of one of the sample scenes, just duplicate it and edit it to look the way you want!

Step 3: Add a favorite song

This step is quick & easy. Once you've edited your scenes, pictures, videos, and text, choose "Audio" from the main editing menu. Here, you can add a song you have saved to your iPhone, or you can paste a link to any music you found on YouTube or SoundCloud.

Step 4: Download & share

Once your video has been uploaded to the Studio, just click the red "Publish" button in the top right corner. Kapwing will work quickly and you can download your video when it's done processing.

Wherever you want to share your Memories Video, it's quick & convenient. If you want to share it on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok, just upload it from your camera roll – it should be the most recent item shown. And if you want to send it directly to a friend via text message or email, just send them the Kapwing link! This way, they can watch it on any device, and the video won't take up any storage space on your phone.
