There are plenty of reasons you might need to make a video smaller: you might want to upload it somewhere that has a file size limit, fit it in a particular space in a document or site, edit a small video without ruining its video quality, or free up some memory space on your phone. But there aren’t many easy ways to choose the exact size of your video.

In this article, I’m going to show you how to use a free online tool called Kapwing to choose the exact size you want for your photos and videos. Kapwing works well on computers, phones, and tablets, and gives you the functionality of a high-powered video editing software without requiring you to download any apps. To shrink your videos, you’ll need to know just three steps:

  1. Upload Your Video(s) to Kapwing
  2. Choose Your Output Dimensions
  3. Publish & Download!

Step 1: Upload Your Video(s) to Kapwing

You can find your videos anywhere on the Internet (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc.) since Kapwing lets you easily import videos from almost any site. All you need to do is copy the link to the video or its webpage! And if you’ve saved your videos onto your device, just make sure you know where they’re located. If you're uploading videos from your own computer, it's a good idea to have your file browser open, so you can click & drag your content into the Kapwing Studio.

Take a look at all your editing options in the Kapwing Studio

To upload your content, just go to and click “Get Started.” Or, if you're already signed in, click "New Project," then "Start with Studio." This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can use all of Kapwing’s editing tools in one place. Once you’re in the Studio, either click “Upload” and search in your file browser, or paste the link to the video you want to upload. If your video is easily accessible, you can just drag & drop it into the Studio window, and it will upload automatically.

Step 2: Choose Your Output Dimensions

Enter the perfect dimensions for your video

Once all your content has been uploaded into the Kapwing Studio, it’s simple to choose your exact output dimensions. Just click "Custom Size" from the menu on the right-hand side of the Studio. In the custom resize window, you have a ton of options:

• To use a preset aspect ratio, click on one of the options under "Popular Sizes."
• If you want to resize your video with the same aspect ratio, make sure the aspect ratio is locked (you'll see a purple button that says "unlock aspect ratio") and enter the exact width or height that you'd like. The other dimension will be calculated so the aspect ratio remains the same.
• If you'd like to fully customize your video's dimensions, unlock the aspect ratio and enter the width and height that you want. There are no lower limits, so you can make your videos as small as you need!

Once you've adjusted your video's size and dimensions, just exit the custom resize window. And while you’re in the Kapwing Studio, you can make any other edits that your video needs:

Add & edit text
• Add pictures, GIFs, videos, overlays, & audio
• Add shapes
• Add text animations
• Crop & filter

Step 3: Publish & Download

Once you've edited your video to perfection and selected the optimal dimensions, click "Publish" in the upper right-hand corner. Kapwing will automatically work its magic and your video will be ready to download in no time!

Your resized content is just a click away!

When your video is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen. If you’re using a mobile device, you’ll need to download the very small Kapwing mobile app from the App Store. The app doesn’t require any login – it’s only meant to help you download your videos! To download your video on your iPhone, just copy the URL of the download page and paste it into the URL field in the Kapwing app. Now your video is ready for you to share anywhere!
