How to Remove the Background from Any Image

Need to make a custom sticker? Convert a logo to a transparent PNG? Remove a blemish behind the subject of a photo or replace the background with something new?

You don't need Photoshop to remove the background from a picture. Instead, try Kapwing's free Remove Background editor. It has a Magic Wand tool to make sections of similar color vanish, as well as a manual eraser for precise edits. Here's what you'll need to do to remove the background from any image:

  1. Upload a photo
  2. Erase the background
  3. Process & download

Step 1: Upload Image or Photo

Start by heading to Kapwing's Remove Background from Image tool in your browser and click "Choose an image."

Once you're in the editor, you'll be able to select “Click to Upload” and search in your file browser, or paste the link to the picture you want to upload. If your picture is easily accessible, you can also drag & drop it into the editing window, and it will upload automatically.

Step 2: Erase the background

Once your picture is fully uploaded to the Studio, click on it and select “Erase” from the menu on the right. This will open up multiple options for you to remove the background of your image or video: Remove Background, Erase, and Magic Wand.

With the Magic Wand tool, you'll be able to select several sections of your image background to remove. Double-check the area that is selected and click Remove Pixels in the right-hand menu. You can change the sensitivity slider to select more or less of the background with the magic wand. Click on different parts of the background to remove as much as possible.

If you need more precise control, select "Erase" from the right-hand menu and click and drag your cursor over the sections of your photo that you want to make transparent. If the eraser tool is too large or too small, change its diameter by dragging the Eraser Size slider to the left or right. And to be extra precise, change the zoom percent to zoom in on the picture.

Now that the background is removed, consider what you want to replace it with instead. You can download the image with a transparent background by choosing the "transparent" background color selection. If you export the image with a transparent background, the output file will be a PNG, an ideal format for emotes, cutouts, and icons.

In my example, I used the Images library in the left-hand sidebar to find a stock background for my image.

Step 3: Process and download

Once you've removed the background from your photo, click "Export" in the upper right-hand corner. Kapwing will automatically work its magic and your PNG picture will be ready to download in no time. When your picture is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen.

If you're not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you've signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final image.
