The lasso tool for editing images online can be great, but not if you just need to delete something, and be done with it. The lasso tool requires you to outline an object with your cursor and invert sections to remove what you want.

There are two solutions to this: a manual eraser and an eraser that does the work for you. In the Kapwing Studio, you can use both to remove the background from any photo. Follow these simple steps and I’ll show you exactly how it works:

  1. Upload your image
  2. Erase the background
  3. Download your edit

1. Upload your image

First, go to Kapwing.com, click "Tools" in the upper menu, and open’s Kapwing’s Remove Background From Image tool. This tool works on any device and requires no download.

Once you've gotten to the tool, upload your image by finding it in your file browser or pasting a link in the URL field, if your picture is stored online.

2. Erase the background

Now, Kapwing gives you two options for removing the background: the Magic Wand and the Eraser. While an image lasso will require you to outline your object and rely on AI to distinguish its borders, the Magic Wand identifies objects in one click by deleting areas of similar color. You can adjust the sensitivity to select a broader area (shift to the left) or more limited area (shift to the right).

On the other hand, the Eraser gives you full control over what you delete, while an image lasso tool forces you to rely on its accuracy in identifying objects. Slide the handle to the left for a bigger eraser or right for a smaller one. Check out the example below (GIF made with Kapwing).

If you want to erase down to the pixel, you can do that. Use the zoom tool in the top right and increase the percentage. Now, select a smaller eraser size and follow the edge of your desired cut out.

The more you zoom in, the easier it is to erase that exact pixel. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment and use the undo option if you mess up.

3. Download your edit

Once you’re satisfied, click "Export Image" from the top right corner of the Studio. After your image processes, click the Download button to save your transparent PNG to your device.
