Every photo tells a story, but what if you need two pictures to complete the narrative?

Photo editing software is helpful when you want to join photos together, but this option is time-consuming and expensive. You have to spend hours getting comfortable with the interface, then learn each tool and function. With busy lives and packed schedules, this is far from convenient.

In this article, I’ll show you how to put two pictures together with a template.

  1. Open the side by side collage maker
  2. Upload photos
  3. Export and share

Step One: Open the Side by Side Collage Maker

I'll be using a 2x1 collage template by Kapwing, an online photo and video editor. You can use this template on any device in your browser. Click the blue make it button below to open the template.

The template has a 1:1 aspect ratio for a square image. You can resize the background a few ways before you combine your pictures. Click an output size in the top right corner or click custom size to add new dimensions.

Step Two: Upload Photos

Click replace to add pictures in each section of the collage template. Below is an example of what the final picture can look like. Multiple family photos capture priceless moments and can be sent to relatives near and far. This idea is great for showing how much someone has grown or to show school pictures. Add animated text with a fun color combination, or your favorite gifs for an eye-catching picture.

Have fun and experiment with different ideas. Long-distance couples can make a split-screen photo to feel connected. Each person takes a picture with half of their face showing, then puts them together. You can try this with your hands to make a heart or combine objects. For long-distance couples on the go, combine photos from when you were in the same location.

Capture jaw-dropping transformations with a before and after picture. Home renovations and room makeovers magnify improvements. Makeup artists use before and after pictures to prove their skills to potential clients. Show a personal transformation like the ten-year challenge or debut a new hairstyle.

For artists, take a picture of artwork you made as a beginner and combine it with your latest creation to show your progress. Try adding a title over each section with the text tool to complete the picture.

Try a mirror image effect for a unique take on a portrait. Upload the same picture twice, then flip one picture horizontally so they're facing each other. Post the picture on Instagram to add flare to your profile!

Step Three: Export and Share

Once you're happy with the results, click export image then, download to save to your computer. Share online by clicking a social media icon or click, copy link to post somewhere else.
