Frequently Asked Questions
We have answers to the most common questions that our users ask.
Is the Music Visualizer free?
Although you can create waveforms and add stock images and videos for free, Kapwing's Music Visualizer requires a Pro account to export your project.
Is there a watermark on exports?
If you use Kapwing on a Free account, then all exports — including from the Music Visualizer — contain a watermark. Once you upgrade to a Pro account, the watermark is completely removed from your creations.
Can I customize the sound wave art?
Yes, you can choose between six different waveform styles, including circle, bubble, stacked bars, and classic. You can also change the sound wave art color and adjust aspect ratio, position, and duration using simple settings tools.
What kinds of audio can I upload?
Kapwing supports a wide range of popular file types for audio, including MP3, WAV, MKV, WebM, FLAC, and OGG. Note that audio exports in Kapwing will always be MP3, as we feel this format represents the best tradeoff between file size and quality.
Can Kapwing generate original music and audio?
Yes, Kapwing also has an Audio Generator. Chat with Kapwing's AI assistant to create original songs, sound effects, and lyrics. Then bring them into the studio to add custom music visualizations.
How to visualize music with Kapwing
To create sound wave art with Kapwing, just upload an audio file (or video file with audio). Select the audio file by clicking on it in the timeline, then click "Add Waveform" under "Adjust" in the righthand toolbar. Your sound wave will automatically populate on your project canvas.
From there, you can edit your waveform as much as you want. You can also add related images, videos, and GIFs from the extensive stock library. When you're ready, click "Export Project" at the top right to save your sound waves as a video or GIF.
Should I add subtitles along with sound waves?
Yes — pairing subtitles with sound wave visuals boosts both engagement and accessibility. For music clips, lyrics or vocal cues help viewers follow along, especially on muted autoplay platforms like Instagram or TikTok.
What types of audio content benefit most from visuals?
Music videos, song teasers, DJ sets, lyric videos, remixes, and lo-fi edits all perform better with animated sound waves. Visualizers add movement and rhythm, making audio content more compelling and shareable across social media.
What colors or styles work best for waveforms?
Use high-contrast colors to ensure visibility on any background, and choose styles that match your genre or brand. Branded color palettes and custom placements make your visualizer stand out in crowded feeds.
