Easily filter an image online

To make your photos stand out on social media, you need to make visual edits or add filters to them — it's a requirement of great digital content in today's world. Starting with Instagram and VSCO, filters have become popular across social media apps and photography trends. But you don't need to download an app, get Photoshop, or pay for software - you can filter images online using Kapwing's online editor.

Kapwing's online image editor provides dozens of preset filters and fine-grained adjustments that will allow you to tweak the filtered picture. With intuitive layout tools, you can add overlays and multiple layers or filter a single photo. Once you have the perfect filter, you can do even more with the image before you export the finished product like adding text, frames, or animation.

Custom filters from anywhere

Want to tweak the appearance of your video? The right filter can transform a photo, making it look more bold, faded, blurred, saturated, or vibrant. Add a filter to bring out certain hues, refine the lighting, change the saturation or brightness, or apply a vignette around the edges. Filters can also enhance certain visual effects, like making the image more cold, warm, or vintage. You can use a high-contrast filter to make colors more vibrant or a low-contrast filter to add a muted film grade vibe. Whether it’s a selfie, portrait, or landscape photography, filters can up-level your imagery.

One of Kapwing’s popular filter options is the black-and-white and grayscale filter to remove colors. Black and white photography was the only medium available to capture images until the 19th century. This aesthetic, however, continues to thrive as online tools provide users with effects to recreate that timeless look. The stark contrast seen after applying a black and white filter can emphasize shadows, highlights, and details typically glossed over in a photo full of vibrant colors.

It’s also possible to overlay an animated or static layer to filter images within Kapwing. Find a free filter online or search for a free filter in Kapwing’s stock image library, integrated with Pexels and Unsplash. If you have an overlay filter, drop both layers onto the Kapwing canvas and adjust the opacity of the top layer. Or, add a transparent PNG frame to allow the main image to peek through. With simple collaging features, Kapwing makes both techniques simple.

Kapwing’s filter editor uses CSS filters on the frontend to emulate the visual changes. Then, when you click export, we burn the JPG file together using client-side processing and client-side FFMPEG. HTML canvas also powers our tech stack.

Kapwing supports all types of image files. Upload a PNG, JPEG, icon, or any type of picture. Then, click Export to get the download-able version. In three clicks, you’ll get your filtered photo to share anywhere. In addition to color filters, Kapwing offers audio filters and video effects to support modern creators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bob, our kitten, thinking
How do you apply a sepia effect on an image?
Most image editors have a sepia filter that you can apply to make your video more yellow or golden and have lower contrast. Kapwing, for example, has Sepia as a pre-set filter option. Sepia often fades an image, making it look older and more historic. Creators can also use sepia to age their photo and make it look vintage.
How do you remove the color from an image?
If you want to remove the reds, blues, and yellows out of your image to create a black and white shot, you can apply a grayscale filter. As you drag the slider, everything in the picture will become black, white, or a shade of gray. You can still adjust other color settings, like the brightness or contrast of the image, even if it’s been made monochrome. Try the “Moose,” “Grayscale,” and “Maxwell” filter options.
How to create your own Instagram or TikTok Filter?
At Kapwing, we created a “What Meme Are You?” Instagram face filter and a “Little Miss Meme” TikTok face filter. It’s pretty easy to create a rotating image filter of your own and publish it in the explore section of the filters.

By the far the most user friendly software to use.
As a housewife at home looking to start a Youtube channel for fun with absolutely zero editing experience, it was so easy for me to teach myself via their YouTube channel. It takes the tediousness out of editing and encourages creativity. As long as Kapwing is around, I will be using their software.

Love this site.
As a English Foreign Language Teacher, this site helps me to quickly subtitle interesting videos that I can use in class. The students love the videos, and the subtitles really help them to learn new vocabulary as well as better understand and follow the video.
