There are many reasons why you might want to record audio on an iPhone. It’s a great way to keep track of your ideas, meeting notes, podcast recordings, or voice overs for social media content. You actually don’t need an expensive microphone or software to get great results because you’ll only need the device in your pocket - the iPhone. I put together 3 ways to record audio using your iPhone.

1) Voice Memos

The iPhone has a built in application called Voice Memos, which turns your iPhone into a portable audio recorder. By default, iPhone’s Voice Memos app records audio in compressed audio quality, which saves storage space on your iPhone versus lossless audio quality, which takes up more storage space.

2) Kapwing

Kapwing is an online, collaborative platform for creating images, videos, MP3 files, and GIFs. The Kapwing Studio allows you to record audio and video with your iPhone and immediately uploads everything into the timeline. From there, you can save your recording as an MP3 file, saving space on your phone by storing everything online.

3) Other Voice Recording Apps

The Apple App Store has a variety of voice recording applications that you can choose from to download and record audio with several functions not provided by voice memos. Below are the top 3 voice recording applications in the Apple App Store.

How To Record Audio on Your iPhone

Okay, so now you know which applications you can use. Next, I'm going to show you how to record, upload, edit, and export your audio.

  1. Record and Upload Audio
  2. Edit Audio in Kapwing
  3. Export, Download and Share your audio

Step 1: Record and Upload Audio

iPhone Voice Memos

Locate and open the Voice Memos app on your iPhone, then press the red circle at the bottom of the screen. Swipe up or tap on the screen again to view the timestamp, audio timeline, pause button, replace button, and trimmer. Sometimes when you’re recording your audio you need to stop the recording to take a break. With Voice Memos, you can use the Pause button instead of ending the recording. You can then click Resume to continue recording your audio. When you are finished recording, click on the red circle again or click Done on the right corner.

Name the recording by clicking on New Recording and changing the file name. Next, click on the three blue dots to save your audio recording to your iPhone files.

You can also upload your Voice Memo to Kapwing to make any edits or save storage space by keeping your recordings online. To do this, go to kapwing.com in the Safari app on your iPhone. Click Start Editing, select Click to upload and choose Browse, then locate your Voice Memo that you previously saved in your files. Wait a few seconds for your audio file to upload into the Kapwing Studio timeline.

Kapwing

Go to kapwing.com in the Safari app on your iPhone and click Start Editing. Select Click to upload and choose Take Photo or Video. Record your video and click Done when you're finished. Wait a few seconds for your video to upload into the Kapwing Studio timeline.

Step 2: Edit Audio in Kapwing

When you're in the Kapwing timeline you can move the marker anywhere on the timeline to edit that specific section. To trim and remove content from the beginning and end of your audio file, drag the far left or right side of the audio file. To edit content in the middle of your audio file, move the marker along the timeline, select Split, and the audio file will split in half.

(Optional) Add Music to your Recording

If you’re creating a voice over or podcast recording, you can add music to set the tone. An easy way to accomplish this is by going to youtube.com in your browser and searching for a song. Copy the link to the video and go back into Kapwing. Click on Upload, paste the YouTube link, and wait for the song to load into the timeline.

Step 3: Export, Download, and Share Your Audio

When you’re ready to export your audio, click on the arrow where it says Export to view the drop-down menu options and select Export as MP3, then click Export Audio. Wait a few seconds and you will be taken to the Download screen. Click Download and your MP3 file will be saved in your iPhone’s files.
