A lot of photos in your camera roll seem a little bit... off. Unless you're living in italics, all your photos should look right-side-up. Or you might want things to look a little bit crooked, so you can make quirky tourist posts, or a stylish collage:

Tilted photos can give your projects a lot more personality.

But if you're using the editing apps that are built in to your device, you won't be able to tilt your pictures the way you want. On an iPhone or Mac computer, for example, your rotation tool automatically crops of the edges of rotated photos, so they remain rectangular. There's no option for rotating the whole picture.

Built-in software automatically crops your rotated images.

I'm going to show you how to rotate your photos in under a minute on any device, all online and for free. I recommend using Kapwing to tilt your images, since it gives you the greatest flexibility to make your slanted pictures look just the way you want. Here's how:

  1. Upload your photo(s) to Kapwing
  2. Rotate your photo
  3. Process & download

Step 1: Upload Your Photo to Kapwing

You can find your photos anywhere on the Internet (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Images, Google Drive, etc.) since Kapwing lets you easily import pictures from almost any site. All you need to do is copy the link to the photo or its webpage! And if you’ve saved your pictures onto your device, just make sure you know where they’re located. If you're uploading photos from a computer, it's a good idea to have your file browser open, so you can click & drag your content into the Kapwing Studio.

All you need is a link to use files stored online.

To upload your content, just go to Kapwing.com and click “Start Editing.” Or, if you're already signed in, click "New Project," then "Start with Studio." This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can use all of Kapwing’s editing tools in one place. Once you’re in the Studio, either select “Click to Upload” and search in your file browser, or paste the link to the picture you want to upload. If your picture is easily accessible, you can just drag & drop it into the Studio window, and it will upload automatically.

Step 2: Rotate Your Photo

Now it's time to tilt your picture to the exact degree you want. Once it's fully uploaded to the Studio click on your photo to select it, and you'll find all your editing options on the right side of the window. Under "Rotate" on the right-hand side, you'll see 5 different options. The first is the degree-by-degree rotator. Just click on the minus-sign to turn your photo counter-clockwise by one degree at a time, and the plus-sign to rotate it clockwise.

You also have some streamlined rotation tools for quicker edits. The next button to the right quickly rotates your photo clockwise by 90°. If you simply want to change the orientation of your photo all it takes is a click. And to try out different tilts, select your photo layer and click & drag the rotation button at the bottom. This allows you to incrementally rotate your picture with a simple click. This tool automatically snaps into place at all multiples of 45°, so if you want to rotate to an angle near one of these values, you should use the "+" and "-" buttons instead.

All the tools you need are in the Studio.

Now, finish your project with any other edits your picture may need! For mine, I changed my background to a custom color, resized my photo to 1:1, adjusted its brightness & contrast, and added some shapes to bring out the rotation. You can also add text, animations, and other images, GIFs, or videos.

Step 3: Process & Download

Once you've edited your picture to perfection and tilted it to the perfect degree, click "Publish" in the upper right-hand corner. Kapwing will automatically begin processing your tilted image, and it will be ready to download in under a second!

When your picture is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen. If you're on a smartphone, long-press on the image to download it to your camera roll. You can also click "Edit" to make changes to the picture, or click the icons to share the image directly to social media. If your picture has a Kapwing watermark on it, just sign in and save the watermark-free image to your Workspace.
