One of the main parts of TikTok's appeal is its music, especially after it merged with Musical.ly in 2018. Most TikTok videos you watch are accompanied by a song – sometimes TikTok lists the song at the bottom of the video, but sometimes it just says "Original Sound." This means that the user added a song that wasn't included in TikTok's catalog of music. It happens all the time – TikTok has a lot of music for you to choose from, but most songs aren't available in their music library.
So how can you add any song you want? It's pretty simple, really. I'm going to show you a quick, free way to add any song on the internet or your phone to your TikTok videos, using nothing but your phone. You'll need to know just four steps:
- Find the video and song that you want to use
- Upload them to the Kapwing Studio
- Process & Download
- Post on TikTok
Step 1: Find the Video and Song That You Want to Use
Kapwing lets you use songs and videos from anywhere. It's easy to record your video using your camera app, or make several and upload them to Kapwing together. And if you want to use a video you found on the internet, all you need to do is copy a link to it. But if you need to use some of TikTok's video features, like special effects, filters, or easy clip recording, just record your video in TikTok, post it as "Private," and copy its link! To copy the link to your private TikTok video, just click the "Share" icon and find the button that says "Copy Link."
Finding the song you want to use is even easier. Kapwing lets you upload songs that you have saved on your phone, or songs you found on YouTube, SoundCloud, Google video search, or anywhere on the web – I recommend YouTube, since almost every song I know can be found there. All you need to do is copy a link to the song or video's page.
Step 2: Upload Them to the Kapwing Studio
To put your video and music together, head to Kapwing.com in your phone's browser. Go to the Studio by clicking "Start Editing" from the homepage. Now, either choose "Click to Upload" to find a video on your phone, or paste the link you copied below to upload your video to the Studio.
Once your video has uploaded to the Studio, scroll through the top toolbar and choose "Audio." Here, you can upload your song the same way: either upload a song you have saved on your phone, or paste a link to the song you want to use from the web. In the Add Audio page, you can delay when the song starts, or choose "Trim Audio" to select just part of the audio file that you want to play in your TikTok video.
Step 3: Process & Download
Once your music has been added and your video looks the way you want, click "Publish" in the upper right corner of the Studio, and it should take under a second for Kapwing to process your video. Once it's ready, just click "Download" from the right side of the screen, and your video will be saved directly to your device.
If you're using an older version of iOS, you'll need to download the small Kapwing app from the App Store in order to save your videos to your camera roll. It will only take a few seconds to download, and doesn't require any downloads.
Step 4: Post on TikTok
Now that your video is saved to your phone, open your TikTok app and select the "plus" button in the middle of the bottom toolbar. Make sure you've given TikTok access to your camera, microphone, and camera roll, and choose "Upload" to the right of the record button.
Find the video you downloaded in your camera roll – it should be at the very top – and select it to upload to TikTok. You can click "Next" to get to the final post page, making edits in TikTok along the way if you want. (You don't need to add audio to our video, so just choose "Original Sound." On the final page, just add a description, hashtags, and anything else your video needs before you post it publicly.
