Your gaming logo is the first thing viewers see when they interact with you online. In the split second they glance at your logo, the decision to engage or scroll by is made. If your logo looks like everyone else’s, you’ll be ignored. On the other hand, if you put time into your logo and it reflects what you stand for, viewers will start connecting with your brand.

Making a custom gaming logo isn’t easy. Most gamers hire a designer which can cost quite a bit and take days or weeks to finish. Another option is to download a stock logo but, you risk looking like everyone else who uses these designs. The last option is to create your own from scratch. While this sounds hard, it can be quite easy with the right guidance and tools for the job.

In this article, I’ll help you create a brand for your gaming logo and make it come to life for free. We’ll cover different ways to approach your logo, how to get the creative elements and how to put it all together with free tools. If you’re ready to break through the noise, let’s get started.

Define Your Brand

Before making the actual logo, it’s important to think about what your logo will stand for. That means defining your brand, or what you want to represent. This could be a gamer just trying to have fun, a streamer creating educational content, an organization changing the LAN tournament scene, etc., etc. What you represent is your decision, but make sure it’s authentic to your passion and values. Here’s a few examples of different types of gaming brands to take inspiration from.

Personal

Turner Tenny, known as Tfue, is a famous Twitch streamer and YouTuber with a prolific personal brand. His profile picture is his face and he is the star in all his content. Despite being a gamer, the brand is focused on his personality instead of an overarching mission or community.

Gamertag

Jaryd Lazar, known as summit1g, is a famous Twitch streamer and YouTuber who uses a gamertag as his brand. The logo features a simple ‘1G’ text design to keep things simple. The gamertag takes the attention away from himself and makes it more about the gaming experience he creates for his fans.

Organization

Team SoloMid, known as TSM, is an esports organization known for winning 7 championships in League of Legends. The logo features letters “TSM” with the T encircling the other letters. In a way, their logo speaks to the organization being a collection of teams and streamers who come together under one united brand.

Gather Your Assets

Once you’ve decided what to represent, it’s time to gather the assets to symbolize that meaning. Depending on what kind of brand you’re building, this process may differ. For a personal brand, it’s as simple as taking a picture of yourself with good lightning. Don’t worry about the background too much because you can remove it later and add something more uniform or eye catching (similar to Tfue’s logo).

If you’re building a non-personal brand, skip the design process and search for premade icons to capture the look you’re going for. With these icons, you can make a logo in the next section that’ll not only stand out, but also be super simple to design. Here’s a couple sites where you can find great icons for free.

Flaticon

Flaticon is the largest database of free icons available in PNG, SVG, EPS, PSD and BASE 64 formats. The site makes it easy to search what you’re looking for and suggests related icons when you make a selection. Some icons are behind a paywall but most of the designs are free to download after you sign up for a free account.

Noun Project

Noun Project provides over 3 millions icons, but it differs in that all the icons are black and white. Once you make a selection, you can change the color to whatever you want. Also, the site provides a photo library if you want to experiment with a picture for your logo. Like Flaticon, the icons are free to download after signing up for an account.

Now that you have the assets, you’re ready to make a logo. We’ll be using the Kapwing studio because it’s free and easy to use. First, open the studio and click ‘Start with a blank canvas.’ If you want a circle logo, change the background to transparent, click ‘Elements’ at the top and add a circle to the canvas. Now you can design on top of the circle.

For the next part, you’ll need to channel your creative side. Change the background to match your brand colors (or whatever color you like) and start adding the assets. To do this, click ‘Upload’ from the top left and select the files from your device. If you want to add text, click ‘Text’ from the top and write the brand name. You can edit the font, color and formatting on the right side.

If you’re going for a personal brand, upload your picture and make some edits to spruce things up. On the right, click ‘Adjust’ to perfect the look of your photo. One tip is to make the picture brighter and increase saturation a bit to make it more eye catching. For more tips, read this article about custom logos.

If you want to get rid of the background, click ‘Erase’ on the right and use the eraser and magic wand to delete the unwanted space. If you need help, check out this article about how to erase the background to learn more. With the background gone, you can customize the background by changing the color or uploading a new picture.

Once you’ve added the final touches, click ‘Export Image’ in the top right and wait for the design to process. Finally, you’re ready to download and add the new logo to your social accounts and webpages. With your gaming logo, you’ll finally be able to stand out from the crowd and attract the right fans to your brand.
