There aren't many good places to edit your GIFs once you've downloaded or made them. It can be difficult to make a simple edit, like cropping, using any built-in apps on your phone or computer.
In this article, I’m going to show you how to crop any GIF for free and online. I recommend using Kapwing, since it works in your browser on any device. To crop your GIFs using Kapwing, you'll need to know just four simple steps:
- Find your GIF
- Upload it to the Kapwing Studio
- Crop & edit
- Publish & Download!
Step 1: Find Your GIF
Kapwing allows you to upload GIFs from anywhere. You can use GIFs from Google Image search, a GIF database like GIPHY, or a storage site like Google Drive. All you have to do is copy the link to the GIF you want to crop! And if you have a GIF saved on your computer, just make sure you know how to find it in your file browser. I'm going to use this classic GIF from the movie Get Out:
If you'd like to create a GIF using a video file you already have, or one that's on the internet, you can also use Kapwing to turn any video into a GIF!
Step 2: Upload It to the Kapwing Studio
Uploading your GIF to Kapwing is just as easy! First, go to Kapwing.com and click “Get Started.” Or, if you're already signed in, click "New Project," then "Start with Studio." This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can crop your GIF and use all of Kapwing’s photo and video editing tools in one convenient place.
To upload a GIF from your computer, phone, or tablet, you can select the button that says “Click to upload” and find the file you want to edit in your file browser. You can also find the GIF in your file browser or Photos app and simply drag & drop it into the Studio window.
And if you want to crop a GIF you found online, click on the field that says “Paste an image or video URL.” Now, right click (or just tap one more time if you're editing on your phone or tablet) on the field and select “Paste.” Kapwing will work its magic and upload your GIF to the Studio.
Step 3: Crop & Edit
Now that your GIF has been uploaded to the Studio, you can crop it to any dimensions you want. To make a simple crop, select your GIF and click "Crop" from the right-hand menu. Here, you can click & drag any corner or edge to change your GIF's crop, and you can drag the cropped box to reframe your project. You can also choose preset dimensions rom the menu on the right.
When you leave the cropping window, you might want to remove the extra white space around your GIF. Simply deselect all layers and click "Remove Padding" from the right-hand menu. You can also set exact dimensions for your GIF by selecting it and clicking "Custom Size" from the right-hand menu and entering the width and height that you would like. You can click "Lock Aspect Ratio" to resize your GIF while maintaining its aspect ratio, or you can enter both dimensions manually.
While you’re in the Kapwing Studio, you can make any other edits that your GIF needs:
Step 4: Publish & Download!
Once you've edited your GIF to perfection and selected the optimal size and dimensions, click on the Settings button near the top right corner (it looks like a gear). Make sure your output file type has been set to "GIF" and exit the Settings window. Now, click "Publish" in the upper right-hand corner. Kapwing will automatically work its magic and your GIF will be ready to download in no time!
When your GIF is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen.
If you’re using an iPhone, you may need to download the very small Kapwing mobile app from the App Store. The app doesn’t require any login – it’s only meant to help you download your content! To download your picture on your iPhone, just copy the URL of the download page and paste it into the URL field in the Kapwing app.
