You might spend hours and hours of your day sitting in front of your computer for work, school, or even just recreation – I probably spend up to 10 hours every day at the computer myself. And what greets me every time I open my laptop? A 13-inch vista from the Bahamas with pleasant color adjustment and personal text.

It’s the perfect wallpaper for me to see throughout the day, and it was important for me to get it just right. If you want to make your own wallpaper the ultimate digital happy place, you can design, edit, and store various versions of it all for free online, in high quality, and on any device. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Upload photo(s) to the Kapwing Studio
  2. Filter, adjust, and add text, frames, or overlays
  3. Export and download
  4. Add as wallpaper

Step 1: Upload Photo(s) to the Kapwing Studio

To make your custom wallpaper, you should probably start with an image or group of pictures. Head to Kapwing.com in your browser and click Start Editing to enter the Kapwing Studio. Here, you have a few different options to upload your files. If you have your photos saved on your computer, you can drag & drop them directly into the Studio or click Upload to find them in your file browser. If you have images saved online, you can paste the link to them in the URL field.

If you don’t already have the image you want to use, you can start by searching the web for your files. Select the Images tab in the upper toolbar and search for images like you would in Google – something like “aesthetic wallpaper HD” or “ocean landscape 1080p” is a good place to start.

Step 2: Resize, Filter, Adjust, and Add Text or Overlays

When you’ve added all the image files you need, it’s time to start editing your wallpaper. The first edit you’ll want to make is to make sure your wallpaper has the right dimensions for your screen. Select the Custom Size option under Output Size in the right side of the Studio and input the dimensions your screen uses. This varies from device to device, so I recommend accessing your computer’s specifications in your settings app, or looking up your screen dimensions in Google. Something like 1920x1080 is common for HD screens in 2021.

Next you can add filters and visual adjustments. Select your image layer and choose the Adjust tool in the right-side menu. Here you’ll see two tabs: the Filter tab, which provides 18 preset filters for you to add different aesthetics and atmospheres to your wallpaper, and the Adjust tab, which allows you to change the brightness, saturation, contrast, opacity, and blur of your image precisely, even if you already applied a filter.

Your wallpaper photo can be so much more than just a pretty picture – with added text and overlays, you can add meaningful phrases, business watermarks, personal branding, and daily mantras to your desktop background. In the Studio, select the Text option in the upper toolbar and you’ll be able to edit your text box however you need, with custom font, color, outline, style, background, opacity, drop shadow, and blur.

Add image overlays the same way you uploaded your main photos, using files on your computer or images on the web. When you use the Erase tool to make your overlays transparent, you can easily add signatures, logos, picture frames, and even god rays and lens flare effects.

Step 3: Export and Download

When your wallpaper looks just the way you want, hit the red Export button in the top right corner of the Studio. In a second or two, your wallpaper image will be ready to save using the Download button on the right.

Step 4: Add as Wallpaper

With your wallpaper image downloaded to your files, it’s time to add it as your desktop background! You can do this in your computer’s settings or preferences app. On Mac computers, open System Preferences, select Desktop & Screen Saver, and find the picture in your file browser.

On a PC running Windows 10, you can right-click on your desktop background and select “personalize.” In this menu, you can change the image for your wallpaper background to the file you downloaded from Kapwing.
