YouTube is a goldmine for original videos that can make you laugh, cry, and think when nothing else is on TV. When a video is so good, you may want to save it to your device to enjoy at any time. A debut appearance in a news clip or a song cover you can't get enough of are examples of videos to store for safekeeping. Whatever the reason, this guide will show you how to save videos from Youtube to your computer or phone for free!

This tutorial uses a free online video editor called Kapwing. With Kapwing, you can download YouTube videos as MP4s or as an MP3. To get started, follow these three simple steps:

  1. Open a free Convert Video tool
  2. Choose File Format
  3. Download MP4

Step 1: Open a Convert Video Tool

Head over to Kapwing on your device, click "Tools," and scroll down to select the Convert Video tool. Then visit YouTube, find the video you want to save, and copy and paste the link. With the free version of Kapwing, you can export videos up to seven minutes long. In the next step, I'll cover how to trim videos that are over this limit.

Step 2: Choose File Format

Once your video loads in the editor, you can change the file format by clicking the arrow next to the green "Export Video" button. The default option exports the Youtube video as an MP4 file.

For this example, the default option works well, but you may want to explore the alternatives for future projects made in Kapwing. Below is an overview of what you can make from a YouTube video with the additional formats.

  • MP3 – Convert the YouTube video to an MP3 to save a digital version of the soundtrack or music.
  • GIF – Convert your video into an animated GIF, up to 10 seconds long.
  • JPEG and PNG – Save a single image frame from your YouTube video.
  • MP4 – Convert the video into a multimedia format to retain the video and audio. (this is the one to use for this tutorial)

Let's say your video is over the seven minute limit or you only want to save a section of your video. You can drag the ends of the video layer to change the duration, and you can use the “Split” button to select a section of the video. The split button is right above the timeline or you can tap the "s" key on your keyboard. Any extra footage can be deleted, then you can drag and drop the layers onto the timeline to play in the right order.

Step 3: Export and Download

To begin saving your YouTube video as an MP4 click, "Export Video" at the top right side of the screen. If you're on a mobile device, you'll see it at the top center of the screen. Kapwing will extract the video from YouTube and process it as an MP4 file.

Once your video has been processed, you can save the YouTube video to your iPhone, Android, PC, or tablet for easy viewing. All you have to do is click the “Download” button to get the YouTube video as an MP4 on your device. Now you can enjoy watching your video offline, use it in other projects, and publish it on social media!
