Today, people watch videos while on their commute, at work, in the bathroom, in the middle of the night, at the dinner table, and nearly everywhere else. How do video publishers make their video stand out and rise above the noise?

A great way to make your video’s text more eye-catching is to animate it. Text animations add the thumb-stopping effect that can draw viewers and bring attention to your content. Moving, flickering, or flashing text can spice up social media videos, ads, watermarks, and calls to action. You can also add text animations on top of images or GIFs to convert them into videos.

In this article, I’ll show you how to add custom text animations to your videos for free, with an online tool called Kapwing. Unlike professional software programs, Kapwing is a simple website that allows anyone to add text animations to their videos and GIFs. Kapwing is easy to learn, doesn’t make you download any software, and gives you the editing functions of a high-powered video editor. It has a library with these effects:

  • Fade
  • Flicker
  • Wipe
  • Vibrate
  • Hue Rotate

There are three steps to adding text effects and animations to a video:

  1. Upload Your Video Background
  2. Add & Animate Your Text
  3. Publish & Download

Step 1: Upload Your Video Background

Start by thinking about what you want to appear in the background, behind your animated text. Maybe you have a GIF that you want to use to make a meme, or a slideshow of photos to annotate.

Once you have the background you want to use in your text animation video, head to Kapwing and upload or import the background. Creators can insert a video or image directly from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, or any online video source by copy/pasting the link into the Kapwing Studio. You can also search for an image background with the "Images" tool.

To upload a video from your computer, phone, or tablet, you can select the button that says “Click to upload” and find the file you want to edit in your file browser. You can also find the video in your file browser and simply drag & drop it into the Studio window.

Step 2: Add & Animate Your Text

Now that you’re in the Kapwing Studio, you can start to add your text! Select “Text” from the main toolbar to insert a text layer. This will make a new text box. Fill the text with text that you want to animate in.

Creators can change the font's color, font, style, and alignment. Use the corner sliders to adjust the size, position, and arrangement of your text on top of your video or image background layer.

Once you’ve typed and arranged your text, it’s time to add your animations! Make sure your text box is selected and choose “Animate” from the bottom toolbar. In the animation editor, you can choose from five different text animations: fade-in, flicker, hue rotate, wipe, and vibrate. For each of the animation styles, you can adjust the speed, as well!

Reposition your animated text with a click!

You might also want to adjust the timing of your text’s entrances and animations. Outside the video editor, select “Timeline” from the bottom toolbar. Here you can change the entrance, exit, and duration of your text layers.

Step 3: Publish & Download

Now that your video has been uploaded to the Kapwing Studio, and you’re done making all the edits you want, just click “Publish” in the upper right-hand corner. Kapwing will immediately start processing your video.

Once your video is done processing, you’ll go to a page where you can download or continue to edit. Just click “Download” and Kapwing will save the video to your device.
