How to Add Custom Text to Photos on an iPhone

One of the few things you still can't do in the iPhone Photos app is add text to your pictures. I'll show you how to do it online on your phone.

How to Add Custom Text to Photos on an iPhone

Sometimes you need to edit a photo on-the-go when you don’t have time to sit down at your computer to do it. If you’re struck by comedic genius out in the wild, and only have your iPhone to access, you need to know how to add text to your photo.

Adding text to an image on your iPhone isn't supported using built-in apps, but that doesn't mean you have to download a separate app to get the job done. I recommend using Kapwing to add fully custom text to any image, using any browser on your iPhone. Here's how:

  1. Upload Photo to Kapwing
  2. Add Text to Photo
  3. Export and Download Photo to iPhone

Step 1: Upload Photo to Kapwing

Using whichever web browser you prefer to use on your iPhone, head to and select Start Editing to enter Kapwing’s editing studio. You will see a page that is very similar to the desktop version that gives you three options to bring your image into the studio: Start with a blank canvas, Click to upload, and Paste an image or video URL.

Kapwing allows you to upload directly from your iPhone.

Go ahead and tap on Click to Upload and then select Photo Library. This will allow you to access any of the photos you have saved on your phone and bring them into the studio. Find the photo and tap on it to select. This will bring up a new window on which you need to tap on Choose, and your image will be uploaded straight to the Studio.

Step 2: Add Text to Photo

Look in the top-left corner to find Menu and tap on it. This will open a new drop-down menu containing all of Kapwing's editing tools. Choose the third option in this list: Text.

Using the menu, you can add a text box to your photo.

This brings up another menu that will allow you to not only insert whatever text you want, but also customize everything fro font and color to animation and drop shadow. For the moment, just go ahead and tap on Add Text, which is the purple button at the top of the Text menu.

This will now have a small text box appear on your photo. Tapping on it will bring up your iPhone’s keyboard and allow you to put in any words that you want. Once you have the wording down, you can then use your finger to tap and drag the text box to be wherever you want on the photo.

You can also use the purple dots around the text box to change your font size and rotate your text box.

Step 3: Export and Download Photo to iPhone

Once you have the text added to your photo, it is now time to download the new image to your phone.

In order to do this, look in the top-right corner of the screen to the green Export Image button. Tap on this to send the photo to Kapwing’s cloud services to processing and exporting.

You will be taken to a new screen where you can use the Download button under your photo to save it straight to your Photos app. You can also re-enter the editing Studio or make a copy of your photo to change your text.
