White borders have become a popular trend on Instagram feeds, but getting creative with a variety of borders is also a great way to unify or diversify your feed. You might add a branded frame, a themed frame, or a timely frame (like a red/green aesthetic for the holidays).
In this article, I will show you how to add a frame to a picture or video using a free online video creation tool called Kapwing. You can start from scratch to add a narrow colored border or use this Instagram Border Templates collection. Add a border or frame to your Instagram video in these 3 easy steps:
- Pick your border
- Add you content
- Download and share
Step 1: Pick your border
Kapwing's multimedia collage maker allows you to upload any texture or border pattern that you want to put around the video. It can be a plain white border, a custom color, an animated GIF, or an overlay.
If you don't know what border you want to use on your Instagram video, browse through Kapwing’s Instagram Border Template collection to get inspiration. If you have something in mind you don’t see a template for check out these instructions for creating your own borders or chat/email us to request a template.
Once you’ve selected your border, click Make It. The template will load into the Kapwing editor, where you can upload media into the flames. For this example I used flames.
Alternatively, you can add a simple colored border to an image by clicking "Start Editing" from the Kapwing home page. Then, upload the image that you want to add a border to.
Step 2: Add your content
If you've started from scratch, click on the photo you uploaded and use the sliders on the corners to resize the video in the center of the canvas. Then, you can use the "Background" tool to change the color of the background.
Alternatively, creators can find the "outline" tool in the right-hand action column. Change the color and make the border as thick or thin as you want to using the + and - buttons on the outline thickness. If you're using a phone or tablet, you'll need to click "Edit image" to access the border tool.
If you're using a template, click Replace to add your own content to the frame. Your photo or video will be added behind the border.
Drag and drop a video from your device directly to the rectangle or select “Click to upload” to select the files. You can also paste a link from YouTube, Giphy, Kapwing itself, and many other websites to import a clip into the creator.
If you are uploading a video, you can trim it by selecting it and clicking Trim. If you want to add text you can do so by clicking Add Text. You can also resize the canvas for Stories(9:16), YouTube (16:9) or other social media platforms by clicking the resize button in the toolbar.
Once you are happy with your border and the video/photo preview, click Publish to process your media.
Step 3: Export and Share
After a moment of rendering by the Kapwing kittens, your framed photo or video will be ready to download. Click Download to download it to your device or follow these instructions if you have an iPhone. You can now upload it to Instagram!
