How to Make a Vision Board Online

You can break out the scissors, glue, and markers to make a vision board, but designing and creating one digitally gives you more flexibility, takes less time, and doesn't cost a cent. Here's how to do it!

How to Make a Vision Board Online

Vision boards are simple, creative tools that can motivate and inspire you to work, focus, and attain your goals. Icons, words, quotes, pictures, even little mirrors – all sorts of visual reminders and motivators can be collected in one collage to keep you on the path you want. You can break out the scissors, glue, and markers to make one, but designing and creating your vision board digitally gives you more flexibility, takes less time, and doesn't cost a cent.

And you might not even want to print it – digital vision boards can work for you on a daily basis in ways that physical ones simply can't. A physical vision board remains in one place, and can only motivate and attract you at specific times – while you're getting ready in the morning, while you're at work – only when you're physically next to it.

A lockscreen vision board can move and motivate you throughout the day.

A digital vision board, on the other hand, can accompany you wherever you go. It can be your computer desktop, or your phone background. Better yet: your phone lock screen can be your vision board. This way, you see it every time you pick up your phone, and gradually absorb your goals and tasks through repeated, brief attention. The board is unobstructed by app icons and visual interruptions, and it is all contained in one full screen.

Wherever you want your vision board to be placed, and however you want to interact with it, it can be quick and easy to assemble online. I recommend using Kapwing to put your board together – it's browser-based, free to use, works on all devices, and gives you free cloud storage for your files.

You'll need to know just four steps:

  1. Open the Studio or use the vision board template
  2. Make and edit your canvas
  3. Add your photos, quotes, words, & symbols
  4. Publish & download your vision board

Step 1: Open the Studio or Use the Vision Board Template

To get started, either click the button below to open the vision board template, or navigate to and click "Start Editing." You'll go to the Kapwing Studio either way – the template just gives you a head start. In the Studio, you can use all of Kapwing's multimedia creation tools in one convenient place.

Step 2: Make and Edit Your Canvas

Once you're in the Studio, you need to set up your canvas. Start by selecting the dimensions you want, since this determines how you'll arrange the board and what spaces, digital or physical, it can fit into. If you want to use your vision board as a computer wallpaper, for instance, you'll need to know the dimensions of your screen: MacBooks are 16:10, Google and Microsoft laptops are 3:2, and most others are 16:9. To make your canvas the correct size, click "Custom Size" in the right-hand menu and enter the width and height that you want. For 16:10, use 1920x1200; for 3:2, enter 1920x1280; and for 16:9, use 1920x1080.

For other locations, you'll need other dimensions. If you want to use your vision board as a phone background or lockscreen, for example, you'll likely want to use a 9:16 aspect ratio (or taller, for newer phones – the iPhone X, for example, uses a 19.5:9 aspect ratio). To scale up an exact proportion, just enter the ration in the width & height fields, click "Lock aspect ratio" and change one of your dimensions to a larger number – for optimal quality, make your longer dimension 1920 pixels.

Make sure your vision board's dimensions and background color are just right.

You'll also probably want to change your board's background. White is a little plain, so you should choose a color with a bit more character, one that feels calming or motivating. Click on the color button on the right-hand side of the Studio (it says #ffffff), look through the color swatches, and choose a version of your favorite color, or one that might inspire you to act toward your goals. Lighter color and pastels work best for a background, so the element of your vision board stand out.

Step 3: Add Your Photos, Quotes, Words, & Symbols

Now comes the fun part: putting your visions on the canvas in a way that appeals to you. For this step, Kapwing give you several useful tools. To add images and symbols that you have saved on your device, or that you can link to on the internet, choose "Upload" from the top toolbar and either browse your files or paste a link.

If you don't have a particular image in mind, click on "Images" from the top toolbar and search for the item you want to add to your board. It's a good idea to add "PNG" to the end of your search term. This way, your pictures blend in to your background and don't appear too blocky. You can also search for inspirational quotes or terms in the image search. Try typing something like "joy wordart" so you can choose from elegant, eye-catching words and phrases.

All of the Studio's tools can be used to perfect your vision board.

If you'd rather type the board's text yourself, select "Text" from the top toolbar. Enter the text you want, and resize or reposition your text box by clicking & dragging its center and corners. On the right side of the Studio, you'll see all the ways you can customize your text. Customize your font, style, arrangement, color, outline – even animation, if you want your vision board to go somewhere that supports GIFs, like a moving lockscreen on an Android phone.

Since your vision board is intended only for your motivation, go with whatever images, terms, quotes, and symbols speak to you personally. Your dream board doesn't have to be a tool for a few specific goals! It can contain anything that makes you feel confident, driven, or in touch with yourself and your aspirations. Everyone's vision boards will not only look different, but operate and inspire differently, as well.

Don't worry about messing up or creating an "imperfect" board! This is another terrific benefit of designing your vision board digitally: once you've glued a bit of paper, it's there to stay, but with Kapwing, your files are always editable, so you can rearrange and add to your vision board whenever you want a change. If you want a change, or think that a different image might make the board work better, just revisit your board in your Kapwing Workspace and click "Edit."

Step 4: Publish & Download Your Vision Board

When you're satisfied with your vision board, click "Publish" in the upper right-hand corner of the Studio. Your file will be processed and ready to download in just a few seconds (if you're creating an animated vision board GIF, it will take a bit longer).

Your digital vision board is just a click away!

Once your board is finished processing, select "Download" from the right side of the screen, and your video will be saved to your device. If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to download the very small Kapwing mobile app from the App Store. The app doesn’t require any login – it’s only meant to help you download your videos! To download your video on your iPhone, just copy the URL of the download page and paste it into the URL field in the Kapwing app.
