In 2016, the widespread use of political memes on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram permanently reshaped civic discourse on the internet. Thoughtful and nuanced debates about the presidential election gave way to arguments made entirely through reaction GIFs, photoshopped images, and bottom text. It was a strange time and one that would solidly set the stage for where we are today in 2020.
With the next United States presidential election just months away, we want to make better sense of the memes this time around and try to see if they can point to who will come out on top. That’s why we’re keeping an active count of how many memes are made for each candidate on this page all year long. Every meme made is a “vote” for that candidate. We’ll announce the winner of our 2020 Kapwing Meme Election the same week that America heads to the polls.
May the best candidate win!
