How to Combine Voice Memos

How many times have you had an idea, only to forget it moments later? Voice memos are the solution to fleeting thoughts and can serve as important reminders throughout the day.

While some have ditched journals for a quick voice recording, it's not a flawless process. Some devices lack a pause button so multiple recordings are made to capture each thought throughout the day. After awhile, pressing play every few minutes could be an inconvenience. In this article, I'll show you how to combine voice memos for an easy listening experience.

  1. Open Kapwing Studio
  2. Upload voice memos
  3. Combine voice memos
  4. Export and download

Step One: Open Kapwing Studio

I'm using Kapwing, a free browser-based video editor to combine my voice memos. Head over to then click get started. In this example, I'm using my laptop and a Chrome browser to combine my m4a files. Kapwing also supports popular audio files including MP3 and WAV. The maximum upload size is 250 MB for free users and the maximum duration is seven minutes.

Step Two: Upload Voice Memos

If you have multiple voice memos, I recommend naming each one first so they're easy to locate. If you're using Kapwing from your iPhone and the m4a files are greyed out, you can upload them to Google Drive or Dropbox first or send them via email. Click upload or drag and drop your voice memos into the studio.

Step Three: Combine Voice Memos

Drag and drop your voice memos onto the desired position to combine them. You can zoom in and out to adjust your view of the timeline as you make edits. Trim each voice memo by dragging the ends from left to right and use the split tool to separate clips or remove sections from the middle. On the right side of the studio, you can also change the volume and speed.

Step Four: Export and Download

Play the combined voice memos a few times to make sure it plays in the correct order. When you're finished editing, click the dropdown arrow by export video, then click export as mp3 to create an audio file. Once the audio processes, click download to save it to your device.
