Since you can put GIFs almost anywhere, the GIF file type is extremely useful for sharing short video clips. But because GIFs behave like pictures, many video editors don't allow you to incorporate GIFs into your video content. So if you want to add GIFs to an existing video project, or create a GIF compilation video, it can be very difficult to do so.
In this article I'm going to show you how to turn your GIFs into video files using a free, online tool called Kapwing. I recommend using Kapwing for several reasons:
• It's free to use nearly all of its products
• It's easy to learn
• It doesn't require you to download any apps
• It works on computers, phones, and tablets
• You can upload GIFs from any source
• You can edit your GIFs while you convert them
To turn your GIFs into videos using Kapwing, you'll need to know just three simple steps:
- Find your GIF(s)
- Upload your GIF(s) to the Kapwing Studio
- Publish & Download as an MP4!
Step 1: Find Your GIF(s)
Kapwing allows you to upload GIFs from anywhere. You can use GIFs from Google Image search, a GIF database like GIPHY, or a storage site like Google Drive. All you have to do is copy the link to the GIF you want to convert!
And if you have a GIF saved on your computer, just make sure you know how to find it in your file browser. It's always easy to just search the term ".gif" in your file browser to locate your GIF files!
Step 2: Upload Your GIF(s) to the Kapwing Studio
Uploading your GIFs to Kapwing is just as easy! First, go to Kapwing.com and click “Get Started.” Or, if you're already signed in, click "New Project," then "Start with Studio." This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can convert your GIF and use all of Kapwing’s photo and video editing tools in one convenient place.
To upload a GIF from your computer, phone, or tablet, you can select the button that says “Click to upload” and find the file you want to edit in your file browser. You can also find the GIF in your file browser or Photos app and simply drag & drop it into the Studio window.
And if you want to convert a GIF you found online, click on the field that says “Paste an image or video URL.” Now, right click (or just tap one more time if you're editing on your phone or tablet) on the field and select “Paste.” Kapwing will work its magic and upload your GIF to the Studio.
While you’re in the Kapwing Studio, you can make any other edits that your GIF needs:
Step 3: Publish & Download!
Once you've edited your GIF to perfection, you're ready to convert it to a video! Click "Publish" in the upper right-hand corner, and your MP4 video will be ready to download in no time! It will automatically be the exact length of your GIF(s).
When your video is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen. If you’re using a mobile device, you’ll need to download the very small Kapwing mobile app from the App Store. The app doesn’t require any login – it’s only meant to help you download your content! To download your picture on your iPhone, just copy the URL of the download page and paste it into the URL field in the Kapwing app. Now it's ready for you to share anywhere!
