You've seen GIFs while scrolling through social media comments, reading blog forums, and opening emails from colleagues. Now, these moving images are popping up in short video clips. Since GIFs behave like pictures, many video editors don't allow you to incorporate them into your content. This makes adding GIFs to an existing video project and creating GIF compilation videos a difficult task to achieve.
In this article, I'm going to show you how to easily turn your GIFs into video files using a free online tool called Kapwing. I recommend using Kapwing for several reasons:
• It's free to use nearly all of its tools
• It's easy to learn
• It doesn't require you to download any apps
• It works on computers, phones, and tablets
• You can upload and search for GIFs within the editor
• You can edit your GIFs while you convert them
To turn your GIFs into videos using Kapwing, follow the three simple steps:
- Find your GIF(s)
- Upload your GIF(s) to the Kapwing Studio
- Publish & Download as an MP4!
Step 1: Find Your GIF(s)
Your search for the perfect GIFs can be done without Kapwing, but to save time time, I recommend using its free tools to find the right animated images. With Kapwing, you can search for GIFs with the image search tool and browse popular GIFs with the GIPHY plugin. If your GIFs are saved on your device, just make sure you know where it's located. One tip is to perform a search with the file extension ".gif" in your file browser to locate your GIFs!
Step 2: Upload Your GIF(s) to the Kapwing Studio
Uploading GIFs to Kapwing only takes a few clicks! First, head over to Kapwing and click “Get Started” and if you're already signed in, click "New Project." This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can convert your GIF and use all of Kapwing’s photo and video editing tools in one convenient place.
To upload a GIF from your computer, phone, or tablet, you can select the button that says “Click to upload” and find the file you want to edit in your file browser. You can also find the GIF in your file browser or Photos app and simply drag & drop it into the Studio window. To import GIFs from Google Drive, click Google Drive, sign in to your account, and select a GIF to import into the Studio.
To convert a GIF you found online, click on the field that says “Paste an image or video URL.” Now, right-click (or just tap one more time if you're editing on your phone or tablet) on the field and select “Paste.” Kapwing will work its magic and upload your GIF to the Studio.
While you’re in the Kapwing Studio, you can make any other edits that your GIF needs:
Step 3: Publish & Download!
Once you've edited your GIF to perfection, you're ready to convert it to a video! Click "Export Video" in the upper right-hand corner, and your MP4 video will be ready to download in no time! It will automatically be the exact length of your GIF(s).
When your video is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen. If you see a small watermark in the corner, sign in or sign up for a free Kapwing account with Facebook and Google to remove it. Then, download your MP4. Now your video is ready for you to share anywhere!
