A Youtube compilation is a montage video assembled from the best parts of other videos. Compilations can be of sports highlights, fail videos, Vines, or anything else. Each clip adds to the total of the compilation and makes sense with the other clips.

Check out this very short example compilation I made of Celebrity Autocomplete videos:

To make a YouTube compilation, you need to combine multiple YouTube clips into a single cohesive MP4. I recommend Kapwing's online Combine Video tool for creating original compilations. In this article, I will show you how to create a Youtube compilation video from start to finish in 3 steps:

  1. Collect your clips
  2. Edit your compilation
  3. Finish and share

Step 1: Collect your clips

Think about the theme of your compilation to find videos. Do you want it to just be interviews with a celebrity? Or also clips of their acting? Do you want your music video compilation to only have the chorus? Or connect through a specific visual?

You can use as many or as few as you like. To keep track of your videos you can keep their tabs open or write down a list of links.

Step 2: Edit your compilation

Get started by opening the Kapwing Montage Maker and click "Get Started." Kapwing allows you to import videos directly from YouTube and trim down the section that you want to include in your compilation, so you do not need to download the YouTube videos ahead of time.

One by one, copy and paste the links directly into the "Paste a URL" box. You can also choose to upload a video or import a video from another social network, like Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok, to include in the compilation. Below, Grace gives a video tutorial on making TikTok compilations.

Once your clips are done uploading click Trim to trim them to the part you want in your compilation. Use the slider and play button at the bottom of the screen to preview what the final compilation will look like.

Also, you can choose the dimensions of the video using the Aspect Ratio buttons on the left side of the screen. The default is 1:1, but I recommend changing the aspect ratio to 16:9 for YouTube with the "Fit with border" positioning option. Drag and drop the scenes to reorder them.

Kapwing's interface also allows for other visual layout changes, like adding text watermarks, image overlays, and logos. Click the "Edit in Studio" button to open the main Studio view and to design each scene, then upload an MP3, PNG, or MP4 file to the Studio to add it to that individual scene.

For creators making top 10 videos, tutorial videos, and mashups, the text and audio tabs can give you more control of what the output will look like. The "Timeline" view allows you to adjust the timing within one scene, making elements appear and disappear.

Step 3: Export and Save Compilation

When you feel like your compilation is done, click Export Video. The compilation video will be burned together into one continuous MP4. After a few moments of processing, creators can save or download their compilation video to their device. Or, they can share the Kapwing link or publish the media or social media. You can always "Re-edit" to make tweaks or add scenes to your compilation. Kapwing is free with no watermark if you're signed in and your compilation is less than 7 minutes long.

Be aware of copyright restrictions to ensure that you're creating original content, not ripping off the original creator or publisher.
