There's no shortage of reasons to resize a picture: you might want to change its dimensions for a social media post, focus on just one part of the image, upload it somewhere that has a file size limit, or simply free up some memory space on your phone.

Online resize tools usually only include a few standard image sizes, and may not allow you to reposition your photo within a different aspect ratio. It might seem like the only way to resize your image with all the tools you need – cropping, resizing, and changing dimensions – is to use a large or expensive desktop app.

4 screenshots detailing the process of resizing a photo in the Kapwing Studio.

In this article, I’m going to show you how to choose the exact size, aspect ratio, and cropping you want for your photos, for free & online. I recommend using Kapwing, an online multimedia editor that works on computers, phones, and tablets, and allows you to make simple & advanced edits in a fraction of the time you would use in a desktop app. To resize your photos, you’ll need to know just three steps:

  1. Upload Your Photo to Kapwing
  2. Choose Your Output Aspect Ratio/Exact Dimensions
  3. Publish & Download!

Step 1: Upload Your Photo to Kapwing

You can find your photos anywhere on the Internet (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Images, Google Drive, etc.) since Kapwing lets you easily import pictures from almost any site. All you need to do is copy the link to the photo. If you're uploading photos from your own computer, it's a good idea to have your file browser open, so you can click & drag your content into the Kapwing Studio.

All you need is a link.

To upload your content, just go to and click Start Editing. This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can use all of Kapwing’s editing tools in one place. Here, either select Click to Upload and search in your file browser, or paste the link to the picture you want to upload.

Step 2: Choose Your Output Aspect Ratio/Exact Dimensions

Once all your content has been uploaded into the Kapwing Studio, it’s simple to resize your photo or choose your exact output dimensions. To choose from the most common output dimensions, just click one of the options in the "Output Size" area of the menu on the right-hand side of the window!

For an extra-quick edit, choose from the preset dimensions.

To see some other options, or to enter precise pixel dimensions for your picture, just click "Custom Size" from the same menu on the right-hand side of the Studio. In the custom resize window, you have a few options:

  • To use a different preset aspect ratio, click on one of the options under "Popular Sizes." You can adjust to square, Instagram/Facebook/Snapchat story-sized (9:16), landscape (16:9), 5:4, or 4:5.
  • If you'd like to fully customize your picture's dimensions, unlock the aspect ratio and enter the width and height that you want. There are no lower limits, so you can make your images as small as you need! At the moment, neither side can be larger than 1920 pixels.
  • If you want to resize your picture, but would like to keep the same dimensions, make sure the aspect ratio is locked (you'll see a purple button that says "unlock aspect ratio") and enter the exact width or height that you'd like. The other dimension will be calculated so the aspect ratio remains the same.

Enter the exact dimensions you want, or choose from more presets.

Once you've adjusted your picture's size and dimensions,  exit the custom resize window. While you’re in the Kapwing Studio, you can make any other image edits that you want to, like cropping, filtering, adding text,  overlays, audio, shapes, text animations, and more.

Step 3: Export & Download

Once you've edited your picture to perfection and selected the optimal size and dimensions, click Export Image in the upper right-hand corner. Kapwing will automatically begin processing your resized image, and it will be ready to download in under a second!

In just a couple seconds, your resized photo will be saved to your device.

When your picture is finished processing, click the Download button on the right side of the screen. If you're not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you've signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final image.
