There are plenty of ways to find music online – SoundCloud, Spotify, BandCamp, just to name a few – but YouTube is probably the single platform with the most variety and access.

Unreleased tracks, live performances, covers, and international artists' music are often difficult to find in the places you usually get your music, and some are only available on YouTube. But it can be really difficult to find a fast, simple, safe, and reliable way to extract audio from YouTube videos. The internet is crowded with converter tools that work inconsistently, process slowly, and can put both your devices and personal information at risk.

I'm going to show you how to convert any YouTube video to downloadable MP3 file without signing in anywhere, waiting for minutes, or compromising your device. To extract audio from YouTube videos, you'll need to know just 3 steps:

  1. Find your video
  2. Upload it to Kapwing's Video Converter
  3. Publish & download

Step 1: Find Your Video

First, you’ll need to copy the video's URL. You can search for any type of video in YouTube: try searching for a song title, with whatever added keywords you need: terms like "lyric video," "live," "demo," "cover," or "unreleased" might apply to the types of videos you can't find elsewhere. Once you've found your video, either right click on the URL at the top of the page or right-click on the video while it’s playing and select “Copy Video URL.” Now you’re ready to upload your video!

Step 2: Upload it to Kapwing's Video Converter

Once you've  copied the link to the YouTube video you want to use, head over to Kapwing.com and click "Tools" from the menu at the top of the window. Scroll down and find "Convert Video" from Kapwing's list of tools.

Either upload your video or paste a link!

In Kapwing's video converter, paste the YouTube link that you copied in the field that says "Paste a URL," and Kapwing will automatically upload your video to the Studio.

From here, you can make additional edits to create the perfect audio from the YouTube video. In a few clicks, you can split the audio to insert or remove sounds and trim the length so it's shorter. This can be useful if you want to download just a portion of the entire video, such as a particular song performance from a full live show. You can also detach the audio to solely work with the audio layer. All you have to do is right-click the layer then select "detach audio."

Step 3: Create & Download Your MP3!

When you're ready, simply select "Export as MP3" from the dropdown menu on the right side of the Studio. Kapwing will work its magic and your MP3 file will be ready for you to download in no time!

When your MP3 is done processing, click "Download MP3!" If you're using a device running iOS 12 or earlier, you'll need to download the very small Kapwing mobile app from the App Store. The app doesn’t require any login – it’s only meant to help you download your content! To download your MP3 on your iPhone, just copy the URL of the download page and paste it into the URL field in the Kapwing app.
