Kapwing's Frequently Asked Questions

Kapwing is an online content creation platform for generating, editing, repurposing, and collaborating on videos, images, audio, and other digital media.

It combines Kapwing AI, including its conversational assistant Kai, with Kapwing Studio, a browser-based editor for detailed, hands-on control.

This FAQ explains what Kapwing can do, how Kapwing AI works, how plans and credits are managed, and how to handle projects, exports, privacy, and account settings.

What is Kapwing?

Does Kapwing require a download?

No. Kapwing is cloud-based and runs in a web browser. No desktop installation is required.

Kapwing can be used on Windows, macOS, Chromebooks, iOS, and Android. A current Chromium-based browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge generally provides the most reliable editing experience.

A stable internet connection is required because Kapwing does not work offline.

Can teams collaborate in Kapwing?

Yes. Kapwing supports shared workspaces, project sharing, comments, real-time collaboration, folders, Media Libraries, and Brand Kits.

Teams can use Kapwing to:

  • Review projects and exchange feedback
  • Reuse shared media and brand assets
  • Organize content in folders
  • Edit projects collaboratively
  • Maintain consistent visual and editorial standards

Available collaboration features and workspace limits depend on the selected plan.

What is Kapwing AI?

Kapwing AI is Kapwing’s collection of AI generation and editing tools. It includes Kai, a conversational creative assistant that can generate media, work with uploaded content, and perform supported editing tasks from written instructions.

Describe what you want in plain language and attach relevant source files when needed. Depending on the request, Kapwing AI can return generated media or an editable Kapwing project.

For example, you can ask Kai to:

  • “Create a 30-second vertical product video with subtitles and music.”
  • “Turn this article into a two-minute video with voiceover and B-roll.”
  • “Find the strongest moments in this video and resize them for TikTok.”
  • “Add Spanish subtitles to this video.”
  • “Turn this image into a five-second video.”
  • “Merge these five uploaded clips into one video.”
  • “Create a YouTube thumbnail for a video about beginner editing tips.”

You can continue the conversation to request supported changes. For detailed timing, layers, text styling, and other manual adjustments, open the project in Kapwing Studio.

How do I create something with Kapwing AI?

  1. Open Kapwing AI.
  2. Describe the video, image, audio, or edit you want.
  3. Attach relevant images, videos, audio, or supported documents.
  4. Include details such as duration, aspect ratio, target platform, visual style, script, voice, or brand requirements.
  5. Send the prompt and review the result.
  6. Ask Kai for supported changes, or select Edit in Studio for manual editing.
  7. Export and download the finished project.

A detailed prompt usually produces a more useful first draft, but professional prompting or editing experience is not required.

What can Kapwing AI create and edit?

Kapwing AI includes generative tools and AI-assisted editing features. Capabilities vary by workflow, input media, selected model, and plan.

Kapwing AI can help with:

  • Text-to-video and image-to-video generation
  • AI image generation and editing
  • Script-to-video, article-to-video, and document-to-video creation
  • Short generated scenes and longer, editable video drafts
  • B-roll generation
  • Scripts, storyboards, and creative concepts
  • Subtitles and translated subtitles
  • Dubbing, text-to-speech, and voiceovers through Kapwing’s AI tools
  • Video clipping and transcript-based editing
  • Video resizing and social media repurposing
  • Audio cleanup and silence removal
  • Image and video enhancement
  • Consistent AI characters and reference-based generation
  • Combining uploaded and generated media

Not every Kapwing AI tool is available as a direct conversational Kai action. Some tasks may need to be completed using the relevant tool in Kapwing Studio.

See the current collection of Kapwing AI tools.

Can Kapwing AI translate a video?

Kai can add translated subtitles to a video containing speech. Attach the video and specify that you want subtitles in a particular language.

For example:

  • “Add Spanish subtitles to this video.”
  • “Translate these captions into German.”
  • “Subtitle this video in Chinese.”

For translated voiceover, dubbing controls, lip sync, or advanced translation settings, open the project in Kapwing Studio and use Kapwing’s translation and dubbing tools.

Kapwing supports one subtitle language per subtitle track. If you need separate versions in multiple languages, make a copy of the project for each language.

What is the difference between Kapwing AI and Kapwing Studio?

Kapwing AI is the AI generation and editing experience. Kai is useful for describing an outcome, generating a first draft, working with uploaded media, and requesting supported edits conversationally.

Kapwing Studio is the visual editor. It gives you direct control over the canvas, timeline, layers, text, audio, transitions, subtitles, and export settings.

The two experiences work together. A common workflow is to generate or transform content with Kapwing AI, then open the result in Studio for final adjustments.

What are Custom Kais?

Custom Kais are reusable versions of Kai designed for a particular style, effect, workflow, character, or brand.

You can use a pre-built Custom Kai to create a specific type of result without writing a detailed prompt each time. You can also create your own Custom Kai by combining reusable instructions and settings.

Custom Kais can help produce more consistent results for recurring social content, branded visuals, character-based media, or repeatable creative workflows.

Which AI models does Kapwing use?

Kapwing provides access to a selection of generative video, image, and audio models through one platform. The available models and their capabilities can change as new options are released.

Visit Kapwing’s AI models directory for the current list and model-specific information.

Is Kapwing AI free?

Kapwing AI is free to try. The Free plan includes a limited number of credits that can be used across eligible AI tools.

Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans provide additional credits and other editing, export, storage, branding, and collaboration capabilities. Visit the Kapwing pricing page for current allowances and limits.

What are Kapwing credits?

Credits measure usage of eligible AI-powered features. The cost varies based on the tool, model, input duration, output duration, quality, and generation settings.

Your available credits are displayed in Kapwing. Where applicable, review the estimated cost before starting a generation.

Successful generations that do not match your creative preference generally still consume credits. Failed processing jobs should automatically return the credits used for that attempt.

See How Kapwing Credits Work for current plan allowances and feature costs.

Can beginners use Kapwing AI?

Yes. Kapwing AI is designed to let people generate and edit content using ordinary language. You do not need professional video editing experience to get started.

Experienced creators can use Kapwing AI to accelerate repetitive work, develop first drafts, create assets, and repurpose content before completing detailed edits in Kapwing Studio.

Can I upload my own media to Kapwing AI?

Yes. You can attach supported images, videos, audio, and documents when asking Kapwing AI to create or edit content.

Explain how each attachment should be used. For example:

  • “Use this image as the opening frame.”
  • “Use these five clips to create a montage.”
  • “Use this article as the source for an explainer video.”
  • “Use this recording as the voiceover and add relevant B-roll.”
  • “Add Spanish subtitles to this video.”

Only upload content that you have permission to use.

Can I edit videos manually in Kapwing?

Yes. Kapwing Studio includes a timeline and canvas for hands-on editing.

You can:

  • Trim, split, and rearrange clips
  • Add and style text or subtitles
  • Edit and mix audio
  • Add overlays, effects, and transitions
  • Resize the canvas
  • Control individual layers
  • Adjust project and export settings

Start directly in the Kapwing video editor or move a Kapwing AI project into Studio.

Does Kapwing have an iPhone or Android app?

Kapwing does not currently offer a downloadable iOS or Android app. A previous Android app is no longer available to download.

Mobile users can access Kapwing through a web browser at Kapwing.com.

For complex projects, a desktop or laptop will generally provide more screen space and editing control.

Which file formats does Kapwing support?

Kapwing supports the following common upload formats:

  • Images: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, SVG, and WebP
  • Videos: MP4, MOV, WebM, OGG, AVI, 3GP, MPEG, WMV, FLV, and MKV
  • Audio: MP3, AAC, M4A, MP4, MPEG, OGG, WAV, WebM, and FLAC
  • Subtitles: SRT uploads are supported in Kapwing’s subtitle tools and Studio
  • Custom fonts: TTF and OTF uploads are available on eligible paid plans

File-size and export limits depend on your plan. See How to Upload Content onto Kapwing for the current list and troubleshooting guidance.

Why is my file upload not working?

If an upload fails:

  • Check that your internet connection is stable.
  • Confirm that the file is not corrupted.
  • Make sure the format is supported.
  • Check that the file is within your plan’s upload-size limit.
  • If importing from a URL, make sure the content is public or shareable.
  • Try converting an incompatible video to MP4.

The current maximum upload size is 250 MB per file on the Free plan and 6 GB per file on eligible paid plans. Check the pricing page for current limits.

You can use Kapwing’s video converter when a supported file needs to be converted.

Can I import media from a URL?

Kapwing can import videos, images, GIFs, and audio from many public or shareable URLs.

The source must allow Kapwing to retrieve the media. Kapwing cannot import from every website, and third-party website changes can temporarily affect supported URL imports.

If a URL import fails, download the media when you have permission to do so and upload the file directly.

What is a folder in Kapwing?

A folder is an organizational space for projects and media within a Kapwing workspace.

The Free plan includes one folder. Eligible paid plans support multiple folders, allowing teams to separate projects by campaign, client, platform, or workflow.

Projects can be moved between supported folders or workspaces. See How to Manage Multiple Folders for instructions.

How much does Kapwing cost?

Kapwing offers Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans.

Plans differ in:

  • Monthly or lifetime AI credits
  • Upload and export limits
  • Export resolution
  • Watermark removal
  • Cloud storage
  • Brand Kit features
  • Collaboration capabilities
  • Advanced AI features
  • Administrative controls and support

Pricing and feature allowances can change. Refer to the official pricing page for the current comparison.

What do paid Kapwing plans include?

Paid plans provide higher limits and additional creative, storage, branding, and collaboration features.

Depending on the plan, these may include:

  • Watermark-free exports
  • Longer videos and higher export resolutions
  • Larger file uploads
  • Additional AI credits
  • Brand Kits and custom fonts
  • Shared workspaces and additional folders
  • More cloud storage
  • Voice cloning, lip sync, and advanced AI features
  • Enterprise SSO, onboarding, and administrative support

The older term “Premium Tools” may appear in legacy documentation, but current plan benefits should be described using the specific features included with each plan.

How long does Kapwing store my projects?

Storage and project access depend on your plan.

Free workspaces have limited access to recent projects, and free projects are subject to deletion after three days. Paid workspaces retain access to projects for the duration of the subscription, subject to the workspace’s cloud-storage quota and Kapwing’s policies.

Current workspace storage limits are listed in Kapwing’s Cloud Storage Policy.

Do not use Kapwing as the only long-term copy of important source files or finished work.

Do Free plan exports have a watermark?

Yes. Projects exported on the Free plan include a Kapwing watermark.

Eligible paid plans remove the Kapwing watermark and provide higher export limits and resolutions. If you upgrade, you can re-export an existing project without the watermark while the paid plan is active.

Review Kapwing’s Watermark Policy for details.

How do I export or download a project?

When your project is ready, select Export Project and choose the available export settings. Kapwing will process the project and open the final export page, where you can download the file.

See How to Save and Download a Kapwing Project for detailed instructions.

If an export fails, try the steps in Kapwing’s export troubleshooting guide.

Are Kapwing projects private?

Project visibility depends on whether you are signed in, your plan, your workspace settings, and the project’s privacy setting.

Kapwing projects may be:

  • Unlisted: Anyone with the unique project or export link may be able to access the content. Unlisted projects are not listed in a public directory.
  • Private: Access is restricted to authorized users, subject to the project and workspace settings.

Uploads made while signed out may be accessible to anyone with the unique link. Sign in before working with sensitive content.

Eligible paid plans provide additional private-project and private-folder controls. Review the Security and Data Privacy Center and Privacy Policy for more information.

Can I use Kapwing AI content commercially?

Kapwing describes its AI-generated exports as commercially usable. However, you remain responsible for:

  • Having the necessary rights to uploaded or referenced materials
  • Obtaining required permission when depicting real people
  • Avoiding infringement, impersonation, deception, or prohibited content
  • Following the rules of the platform where the content is published
  • Complying with Kapwing’s current terms and applicable laws

Review Kapwing’s Terms of Service before using AI-generated content commercially.

How do I sign in to Kapwing?

You can create or access a Kapwing account using an email address. Kapwing uses passwordless email verification rather than a separate Kapwing username and password.

On the sign-in page:

  1. Enter your email address.
  2. Select Continue with email.
  3. Look for an email from no-reply@kapwing.com.
  4. Enter the one-time code on Kapwing to continue.

If the email does not arrive, wait a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder, confirm that the address is correct, or request another code.

Kapwing may also display supported third-party sign-in options. Enterprise SSO is available to organizations that have configured it with Kapwing.

How do I cancel a paid Kapwing plan?

Kapwing paid subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled.

To cancel:

  1. Open the paid workspace.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Billing.
  4. Choose Cancel Subscription.
  5. Follow the prompts to confirm the cancellation.

You will retain paid features until the end of the current billing cycle. The workspace will then return to Free plan limits.

See How to Cancel a Kapwing Paid Plan for current instructions.

How do I delete my Kapwing account?

You can permanently delete your Kapwing account from Account Settings.

Account deletion removes the account and associated data and cannot be reversed. Kapwing support cannot restore an account after deletion.

Deleting an account is different from cancelling a subscription. If you only want to stop future billing, cancel the paid plan instead.

Read How to Delete Your Kapwing Account before confirming deletion.

How do I get help with Kapwing?

For product instructions and troubleshooting, search the Kapwing Help Center.

If you experience a project or export problem, use Report a Problem where available or visit Kapwing’s Contact Us page. Include:

  • The project URL
  • A clear description of the problem
  • Any displayed error message
  • Relevant screenshots
  • The steps you took before the problem occurred

Providing these details helps the support team investigate more efficiently.
