About the Kapwing MCP

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to outside tools. The Kapwing MCP gives Claude, ChatGPT, and other agents direct access to your Kapwing Workspace — so you can upload footage, add subtitles, dub a video, or grab an export without leaving your chat.

Our mission at Kapwing is to enable video storytelling, and we aspire to support creators with the fastest video editor. The Kapwing MCP enables users to access and leverage Kapwing's editing functionality through a Claude Connector or ChatGPT plugin, or wherever they are already leveraging AI agents to get stuff done.

How to Set up the Kapwing MCP?

To connect to Kapwing through Claude, ChatGPT, or another AI agent, follow the instructions on the MCP integration page. You will need to configure a custom connector and authorize Kapwing's MCP.

Kapwing's MCP works best:

  • ChatGPT or Claude: MCP is an open protocol, so users can connect to Kapwing through any MCP-compatible plugin. However, we recommend trying the MCP with ChatGPT, Codex, or Claude as this is what we have tested and developed the plugin for.
    • Work or Cowork mode also tend to work the best. Try using Kapwing's MCP by giving Cowork, ChatGPT Work, or Claude Code access to a folder access to a folder on your computer and to your browser.
  • When signed in: Sign in to the embedded browser with your Kapwing account so that you can open project links and edit them. You may run into authorization checks if you are not signed in.
  • With smarter models: We recommend using Opus 5+, GPT 5+, or comparable models for the fastest, best results.
  • Auto-accept mode: Claude and ChatGPT will ask permission to access your Kapwing data. Once you're comfortable with what the connector can access, you can enable auto-accept to reduce permission steps.

Why can't I find Kapwing in the Plugins or Connectors Directory?

We hope to add the Kapwing MCP to OpenAI's Plugins Library and the Anthropic Connectors Directory soon! However, we have not submitted our MCP for their approval yet. Stay tuned.

What does the MCP have access to?

The MCP is authorized on a per-user basis, so the MCP has access to whatever data and workspaces that you have access to. Through the MCP, you can access folders which are private to you, like the default "My Drafts" folder that exists in most Workspaces.

What can I do with the Kapwing MCP?

Through the MCP, you can use Claude, ChatGPT, or other LLMs to interact with the Kapwing website.

Once you connect, ask it for a link to your latest Kapwing Project to seee what it can do. Or, ask your agent: "Upload the video at ~/Desktop/demo.mp4 to Kapwing and add English subtitles." You should see it request permission, upload, transcribe, and hand back a project link.

The tool calls available through Kapwing's MCP fall into these capability categories:

  • Workspace and account information – See your latest projects, ask about the status of projects, query your brand kit and remaining AI credits, check your profile info, review your collaborators, and more.
  • Recent project information – Find projects, ask about duration, check metadata, look up date created and last edited, and more.
  • Upload assets – Upload assets to your Kapwing media library. These assets can be edited within Kapwing or hosted on Kapwing and embedded elsewhere.
  • Download exported projects – Access and save exported MP4 videos

Kapwing can also assemble projects and make edits for you from the assets that you upload. Currently, Kapwing's MCP supports the following video editing tools:

Who uses the Kapwing MCP?

We have dozens of users who we have interviewed about MCP technology. Some use cases that the MCP will support:

  • Integrations with other cloud hosting services: Upload latest Kapwing exports to services like Air, Dropbox, and Google Drive by setting up a regular automation to pull latest exports from the Kapwing Workspace and push them into your cloud storage service.
  • Push assets to Kapwing from other sources: Have Claude review and choose files to upload to Kapwing, or push specific assets into your editing Workspace
  • Analyze transcripts: Upload assets to Kapwing and get the transcript or captions, review them, analyze the information, and make tweaks
  • Automate common editing workflows: Social media managers use the MCP to automate captions, translations, and more through Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI products.
  • Programmatically translate videos from one language to another: Dub videos automatically with scheduled GPT or Claude Cowork runs. Everything is editable along the way.
  • Develop custom apps: Vibe coders can use the MCP to set up custom apps, like a status monitor or content studio.

Pricing and Credits

The MCP is included in Kapwing's paid subscription at no additional cost.

However, AI features like Dubbing, Subtitles, and Translation deduct from the Workspace AI Credits pool at the same rate as similar edits on the website. The MCP usage is subject to the same limits as using the Kapwing website.

Uploaded assets contribute to cloud storage, as they are stored in your Kapwing Media Library. Review and manage your storage in the Workspace Media Library.

Do I need a Business or Enterprise account to access the MCP?

Right now, the Kapwing MCP is available for beta testers only. Our Trusted Testers are comprised of Business and Enterprise customers who have requested access to an MCP in the past.

We're evaluating the user needs and plan to make the Kapwing MCP available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers.

What are the limitations of the Kapwing MCP?

The Kapwing MCP cannot yet rename projects, access brand kit, generate videos, or edit videos with multiple assets, although we plan to add this functionality soon. Please let us know what we should add by sharing feedback with our team! Its ability to scan recent projects is limited to the 5 most recent projects in a Workspace.

What's the size limit of files uploaded through the MCP?

Kapwing's MCP supports 5GB files through the uploader interface and 500MB from a URL.

I got the "egress from this container is blocked" error

This common issue arises when using a sandboxed environment like Claude Cowork. If you run into the error, you should see an option to upload the file directly through an embedded uploader with the Kapwing logo. Manually select the file from your computer to continue with the editing task.

Another way around this issue is to give your agent access to your browser through Claude or ChatGPT's connected browser/computer. In our testing, we have found ChatGPT to be faster with handling background uploads.

How to revoke access to the Kapwing MCP?

Disconnect the Kapwing MCP to revoke access to your account.

In Claude: Customize > Connectors and click on Kapwing. Review the available tool calls there and click Disconnect to remove access.

In ChatGPT: Plugins > find Kapwing. Under the ... menu, click "Uninstall." Manage will show the full tools list.
