Release Notes - March 2026
In March 2026, Kapwing – the AI native video editor – shipped improvements across Kapwing AI, uploads, workspaces, playback reliability, dubbing credits, and in-app support. Here's an overview of our releases from this month.
Kapwing AI
Kapwing AI, our prompt-to-video engine, got smarter and easier to use this month. Here were some major improvements:
- Character consistency: The Create Character modal now explains that characters can be reused across chats to keep a subject’s appearance consistent. We added new character-specific pages like the Leprechaun Generator (which makes videos with a green leprechaun character) to give Kapwing creators inspiring character examples.
- Multimodal understanding: Kapwing can use visual and audio understanding to assemble your clips together. Try "Find the dunks from the third quarter" or other visual prompts! Transcript-heavy videos will still be routed to the Transcript Edit tool call, so Kapwing's editing agent works well for videos with and without text.
- Smart crop: Kapwing AI uses multimodal understanding to frame a speaker in view.
- Streaming: Kapwing AI responses now stream from the LLM, making the chat experience feel more responsive while Kai is working. We also cleaned up duplicated examples, improved long title displays, and prevented users from submitting duplicate messages while a chat response is still loading.
- Auto-Accepting Plans: To make the experience smoother and faster, we added auto-accepting logic when Kapwing AI plan is inexpensive, less than 40 credits.
- Editable Agent Plan: Before confirming a plan within Kapwing AI, creators have the chance to review the cost, prompts, and models which will be used in the generation.
Other bug fixes and feature improvements
New AI Chatbot: Kapwing's customer support team shifted from Freshchat to Helply, improving the quality and performance of our customer support chatbot. Find it on our Contact Us page.
Better Credit Tracking: AI Dubbing credits now reflect the portion of media actually used in a project, rather than charging based on the full source asset. This makes credit usage line up more closely with what users see in the editor.
Accessibility improvements: We improved screen-reader support across Workspace navigation by adding descriptive labels to icon-only controls. We also improved accessibility for toggle controls, increased color contrast on our landing pages, and added proper labeling for the language selector in our footer.
Kapwing's developers shipped several bug fixes to improve core performance and reliability:
- New 404 page and other branding elements to match Kapwing's new logo and brand colors. Brand kit and Workspace polish to match the visual brand.
- Kapwing AI can animate an image into a video of any aspect ratio
- Fixed MKV uploads
- More reliable previews and playback: We made several behind-the-scenes improvements to preview generation and video playback, including using HLS paths more consistently and optimizing regeneration.
