How to Remove the White Background from Any Photo Online

If you're working with graphic designs or stock photos, it's often necessary to remove a plain white background fro a picture. I'll show you how to do it quickly online.

How to Remove the White Background from Any Photo Online

Whether you’re working on a YouTube thumbnail or banner, your next viral social media post, or a meme, your background matters. The right background can really make your image pop, so a plain white backdrop can always be improved.

Changing up the background of an image can make it look completely different, so here’s what you need to do to remove white background:

  1. Upload the Photo to the Kapwing Studio
  2. Erase the Background
  3. [Optional] Fill the background
  4. Publish and download as a PNG

Let’s go through the process step by step.

1. Upload the Photo to the Kapwing Studio

To get started, head to in your browser and upload your photo the Kapwing Studio. You can drag and drop your image straight to the canvas, paste the URL, or upload it from your device's file browser.

2. Erase the Background

Using the toolbar on the right hand-side, choose the “Erase” tab and use the Magic Wand tool to erase the existing background. If there's any left over, you can erase the background manually by selecting the "Erase" tool and clicking & dragging on the canvas.

Now that you’ve erased the background of your image, you can choose to Export the image as a PNG with a transparent background. This is ideal for custom emotes and emojis, round images, icons, logos, and more where you don't want to have any white background in the picture file. Click "Export image" to save the PNG and share.

3. [Optional] Fill in the Background

If you want to use another image as the background of your picture , upload it using the “Upload” tab on the top left-hand-side corner. Then, hover over the “Layer” toolbar on the right hand-side corner at the bottom and click the “Send Backward” tab. This will send the new image into the background, creating a backdrop for your image.

4. Export and Download

If you’re happy with you new image background, hit the red Export button and then download your new photo. If you're not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you've signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final image.
